Compounding is usually explained with money, interest earning interest until a modest sum becomes a large one. But its deepest lesson is a mindset that applies to almost everything that matters: skills, relationships, reputation, knowledge. Small advantages, repeated consistently and left to build on themselves, become advantages no one can catch. The catch is that most people quit before the curve bends.
Compounding is deceptively slow at first and then startlingly fast. For a long time, the gains look small and linear, easy to dismiss, easy to abandon for something that promises faster results. Then, if you persist, the accumulated advantages start reinforcing each other and the curve bends sharply upward. In practice this means valuing consistency over intensity, choosing things worth compounding and staying with them, and resisting the constant temptation to start over somewhere that looks faster. The people who build remarkable skills, reputations, and companies are usually not the most talented but the most consistent over the longest time. That is compounding, and it rewards those who wait for it.
